WAIHI FOOTBALL.

WAIHI, Saturday.

RUGBY UNION PRESENTATION BALL.

This annual function, which marks the close of the football season in Waihi, and decks the victors with, their hardearned laurels, came off in Tanner's Hall last evening, and proved a great success. The building was most tastefully decorated and draped with many coloured flags and Chinese lanterns. Notwithstanding the wretched state of the weather, fully ninety couples were present. The Waihi brass band, under Bandmaster Gordon, supplied excellent music. Mr W. Corbett (Chairman of the Waihi Rugby Union) acted as Master of Ceremonies in his usual efficient manner. After the first edition of dances had been exhausted, the presentation was made by Mr Corbett on behalf of the Rugby Union. The Senior Cup and caps were presented to the West Club, the champions of the • season. Captain M. Murphey received the . presentation and responded in a suitable manner on behalf of his team. The Junior Cup and caps also fell to the lot of ihe Wpst (representatives, and Mr Wyatt, captain of the seconds, returned thanks. In the second junior division the City men, who had proved themselves the victors, were presented with the Cup, received by Mr Archie Scott (captain). The rep. caps were then presented, Mr Corbett stating that the Waihi representatives Had won three out of the four matches played. He had great pleasure in making the presentation to Mr P. Garvey on behalf of the victors. Mr Garvey responded in a suitable manner. A presentation of a cap was also made by Mr Noonan to Mr G. Ars'cott, chosen as the best player in the West juniors. Mr Lawless presented a beautifully worked medal to Mr R. Thorn for'being the most useful man in the West Club. The Union medal for the best all-round three-quarter back also fell to the lot of this clever three-quarter. Mr Thorn responded in a few well-chosen words, and hoped that he should always be of good service to his club. The Union medal for the best allround forward player was presented to Mr Bennett, who suitably responded.

Another pleasing incident which took place during the evening was the presentation of a handsome pendant to Mr Wm. Corbett by the West junior representatives. Mr J. Hind, in a few appropriate reinarksj. made the presentation, Mr . Corbett responding. A flashlight photogTaph of those who had received the trophies was taken by Mr T. Kennedy. An excellent supper was laid in the lodge-room. Dancing was kept up till the small hours of the morning.
