COUNTERPOISE STAGES.

NOHTHCOTB Oil BiUKENHBAD.

The Birkenhead Borough Council last evening received a letter from Mr AY. Thompson, as chairman of a meeting of ratepayers held t'lio previous Saturday, enc-loising a qopy of the following resolution:—"ln view of definite information given by the manager of the Devonport Ferry Co. to the effect that two-thirds of the cargo conveyed during Hie past twelve months went to Birkenhead, and only one-third to Northcote, this meeting respectfully urges upon their Council to represent to the Harbour Board the justice of having the counterpoise stage erected at Birkenhead instead of at Northcote, as at present recommended to. the Board by their Works Committee." ■ The Mayor (Mr C. B. Button) moved that the letter be forwarded to the Harbour Board. Or. Wallace moved an amendment, "That another deputation be sent to urge upon them the claims of Birkenhead as the most central distributing point, and drawing attention to the claims of Chelsea, at the same tir»e." The recent Northcote deputation misled the Board. Cr. Gascoigne asserted that the manager of the Northcote and Birkenhead branch of the Ferry Company had stated to members of the Northcote deputation that for every ton of cargo which went to Northcote, five tons went to Birkenhead, but the North-1 cote gentlemen were careful to conceal this from the Harbour Board. Cr. Wallace said that Or. Gascoigne had been openly" insulted by one of the Northcote representatives, who said that his statements were" false. He asked that the Council should support Cr. Gascoigne and press it upon the Harbour Board to Mnvestigate the ■ matter for themselves. The Mayor did not think a deputation would have so good an effect as a letter, as a deputation would only be followed up by another deputation from Northcote Cr. Wallace: But their statements are not true; Cr/Ha'dfield thought they ought not to shbw ' that they -were afraid of Northcote, but rather let them see that they were prepared to fight it oait. The amendment Avas carried, and Crs. Kay* Keys and Ga;scoigne were appointed to interview the Harbodr Board. ■ A
