WELLINGTON, this day TEAINING SHIP.
Vt yesterday afternoon's sitting a motion was adopted, at the instance of the Hon. W. T. Jennings, urging upon the Government the need ol establishing a training ship in the colony, as recommended last year by a committee of the Council. Mr Jennings strongly urged the great advantage of the training ship system, while the Hon. 11. J. Eeeves contended that boys now dealt with in industrial schools would be far better dealt with on board training ships. He advocated a training ship for each island. The Minister for Education was ot opinion that there were not sufficient inducements in New Zealand to make our boys talce to the sea. It was more useful'to train them for farming pureuits on land attached to schools. _ The Hon. C. C. Bowen urged that m face of the continued unsatisfactory condition of the industrial schools of the colony, the Government ought to establish'n training ship. In his reply Mr Jennings said that a gentleman in Auckland had ottered to give a subscription of £1000 should a training1 ship be established. He instanced as a successful experiment the training ship which was formerly used at Kohimarama, 75 per cent, of whose boys were doing well at sen. 'The motion was carried on. the ■voices. THE CUSTOMS DUTIES. The Customs Duties Amendment Bill was then taken in committee. Short speeches were delivered by Hons. Sir George Whitmore, J. E. Jenkinson, A. Lee Smith and Twomey. The Bill was reported without , nmendment, and read a third time and ; passed. ( SHOPS AND OFFICES BILL. This Bill was read a second time pro forma, and was referred to the Labour Bills Committee. It makes special provision for the early closing of shops upon the requisition in writing of the owners of not less than three-fifths of till the shops in any borough desiring that all the shops therein shall be closed on the evening of every working day at an hour specified. The Minister shall give notice in "Gazette" that all the shops shall be closed accordingly. The requisition must be certified' by the _ city or borough council, and may be limited to any particular trade within the borough. Occupiers of offices must keep an extra time book. The half holiday provision is extended to persons employed as assistants in hotels and eating houses or restaurants. SALE OF POISONS. In mtoving the second reading of the Sale of Poisons Act Amendment Bill, the Minister for Education explained that the Bill proposed to place upon the sale of mixtures in which poisons were used the same restrictions as those placed on . the sale of poisons under the principal Act. The motion was carried without division.
