FREEMAN'S BAY RESERVE.
J i (To the Editor.) | Sir,—l am greatly surprised at :Se apathy and lack of interest that has been, shown by the young- men of' AucklaiKi/: particularly, in the securing of' Freeman's Bay as a recreation reserve. If the qiies"-,' tion is allowed to drift on, the cbi $jj quence will ho that' a"""small space—too.;. small for the desired object—will be tlw most that the public will ultimately secure. If the football, cricket,' lacrosse,; cycle and athletic bodies could-onl^lS prevailed upon to see how Uvsp. branches, of sport would each benefit by the. laying out. of' Freeman's Bay as a recreation?; reserve, I am sure that, with a little uniijfi ed effort, they wpuld secure for the cit^i a ground that, for beauty of situati°*fl||J and accessibility, is not to be eaualled^fclß New Zealand. ( . "■•i Of course, the task is one wh!ch;woW||;| need an abler pen than mine t6 accqw* ■ | plish, but I should just'like to point out | a convincing reason why the cricketers < more ythan anyone else, should stralcij1; every effort to'secure" the site as a. recreation reserve. For some seasons past the cup matches have been greatly inteWj fered with, owing to the Domain Crjcjcgg: Ground being let for sports meeting.',-" Now, then, as time goes on, .this^etfe (from a cricketer's point.Of view) is bbuna, to increase, and before long the cricketers' will find it impossible to arransre-'a seHel^ of matches lor the season. The. tefiM but of Freeman's Bay-as a.. recriajip%< i reserve and sports ground; with cy^ tracks1, etc., would entirely remove r tli«;, demands for the use of the Domain anl' secure its uninterrupted lease to ,W* "knights of the willow." I trust that tW-' cricketers of: Auckland will be alivem their own interests and work heart. soul to accomplish this object.—l am, etc*, ■■■ AUCELANCES-
