KAURI GUM MAEKET.

AUCKLAND, Wednesday

Business has been quiet in kauri gum during the past week, buyers appearing disinclined to operate at present rates until after the result of the auction sales to be held in London on September Gth has been ascertained. Such a large proportion of glim is now however, sent to America, that London is not so strong a factor in the fixing of prices as it was formerly. In 1899 up to the end of August, 7795 tons of gum were exported, of winch 3773 tons' went to America and 4022 tons to Europe. This year, however, the position is entirely altered. Up to the end of August, 1900, the gum exported totalled 7672 tons, of which only 2775 tons went to Europe, and 4897 to America, showing an increase in the quantity for American buyers of 875 tons, while European purchases show a falling off of 1022 tons. During- the past week the E. L. Mayberry left with 2D3 tons of gum for Europe, and 168 tons for America, which should tend to deplete stocks held locally, as supplies for August were only 759 tons, as against 522 tons for July. For the five days of September, 59 tons of gum were received. Quotations are nominally as follows: — Poor,,ordinary £35 to £42 Fair ordinary £45 to £50 Good ordinary £52 to £62 Superior ordinary........£ 70 to £80 Er.ri Coast £ 80 upwards
