CITY SCHOOLS COMMITTEE.
The Auckland City Schools Committee met last evening. There were presentMessrs Geo. Squirrell (chairman), Sherson, Holloway, Oldham, McLeocl, A. Rosser, and Drs. Walker and King. Wellesley-street School.—From a number of names sent In by the Board to select one for the vacancy at Wellesley-street, Mr H. K. Burns, of the Hukatoro school, Kalpara, was recommended to the Board. Salaries. — The committee recommended that Miss Shrewsbury. ALA., should be ranked as fifth assistant in the school, with an Increase of salary applied for.—Miss M. J. Mcllhone, with 22 years' service, also applied for an increase of salary, which the committee heartily endorsed and recommended. Examination Results.—The report of Inspectors Purdle and Petrie on the examination results at Wellesley-street school and other city schools was read as follows:— Primers, present 230; St. 1, presented 97, present 98, passed 85; St. 2, presented 84, present 81, passed 71; St. 3, presented 75, present 75, massed 60; St. 4, presented 118, present 108; passed 89; St. 5, presented 81, present 80, passed 64; St. G, presented 42, present 41, passed 32; St. 7, presented 36. Nelson-street: Presented 299, passed 280. Napier-street: Presented 460,. passed 390. Beresford-street: Presented 458, passed 420. Chapel-street: Presented 180, passed 150. The inspectors reported that the passes had been determined with scrupulous care. Teachers' Retiring Allowance.—lt was resolved aX the motion of Mr Oldham, "That the Citr, Schools Committee respectfully request the Board of Education to establish a rule that when a teacher has been 21 years in the Bervlce of the Board, and is then by reason of Infirmity compelled to retire, he or she shall be entitled to receive salary in full for a further period of one year." Colonial Scale of Salaries.—The Secretary for Education, in acknowledging letter from committee recommending a colonial scale of salaries, stated the matter was under the Government's consideration. Desks.—The headmaster of the Wellesleystreet school wrote with reference to the state of n number of desks in the school.— It was decided to forward the letter to the Board of Education for their recommendation. Nelson-street School.—Tt was decided to recommend that an additional window be placed in one of the class-rooms of the Nel-son-street school.
