BLACKGUARDISM RAMPANT AT MOUNT EDEN.
(To the Editor.)
Sir.—Seeing in your paper last week an acount of an outrage in Mt. Eden district, may I say a word on the subject. The stato of.things existing is a disgrace and a shame to any Christian community. Not a girl can go from one house to another but she is in danger of an assault from some of these creatures who call themselves men. Last year I had a daughter working in town. She did not leave her work till seven, and each night for nine months I had to go and meet her. Twice she was assaulted and frightened before I met her on Mt. Eden Roadi Once she took refuge in a house close by, and to the credit of all a gentleman.caught the scoundrel and severely punished him, and then rolled him in the gutter. I do not know who the gentleman was, buti offer him my hearty thanks for his manliness and his defence of my daughter. "Our daughters-dare ,not leave.their homes at night without an escort, even to go to a near .'neighbours. A few weeks back I.had to'take a little girl of 14 home to Mount Eden Road. I had with me another younger child. On returning- as we passed opposite Mt. Eden Pound, under some trees, two of these scoundrels darted out and barred our road. The child screamed and these blackguards made off. What pleasure could they find in frightening an elderly woman and a little child? Can nothing be done to alter this state of things. ■ Since your paper of last week, .two moit assaults have taken place close by, as early as half past seven in the evening. (Unfortunately my daughters have no father to defend v them; but cannot some of our young men clear the district of these low bred scoundrels, by watching and punishin-'g the, ■ offenders severely.—l am, etc.,
A MOTHER,
