LLOYD'S QUARTERLY RETURNS.
Lloyd's returns of vessels under construction in the United Kingdom, at the close of the ciuarter ended* June 30th last Bhow a-n increase in the tonnage now build hrg of 5000 tons, as compared with the fi/^ures for last quarter, but a. reduction of about 135,000 tons as compared with the unprecedentedly high total wbich was reached in December. 1898. O$ the vessels under construction in the rJnited Kingdom at the end of June, 420, of i,001,415 tons, are under the supervision of the surveyors of Lloyd's Register with a view to classification by this society. In addition, 55 vessels of 216,----032 tons are building abroad with a view to classification. The total building at the present time under the supervision of Lloyd's Register Is thus 475 vessels of 1,217.447 tons. During last quarter 152 steamers, aggregating 371,290 tons and 5 sailers, equalling- 6880 tons, were commenced in the United Kingdom, and in the same period 185 steamers of, in all 374.432 tons, and 10 sailers of 3957 tons, were launched. Of the vessels under construction 91 were of that most useful size ranging between 3000.and 4000 tons, while 15 "mammoths" of over 10,000 tons figure in the list...
