SSSP aifanWr^n Bradley' J" ShaT Repairs Wanted.-A petition was received from a number of ratepayers in Harbour View Terrace, asking the Council to make some lmpovements, which were very necessary. On the Mayor's motion the matter was referred to the Streets Committee, with power tn act Drain Pipes-.—Messra Brlscoe, McNeill and Co. wrote that the Council^ order for drain pipes would arrive about tne 11th mat. by the Whakatana. Cr Shalclrick suggested that as the pipes were ordered 'or the purpose of laying- in MUton-street to the Woollen Works, that the Council should lose no time and call for tenders tor opening up the trenches. He thought they should deal with the matter at once The Mayor, however, ruled that a notice of motion was necessary ami the matter ended. Electric Trams.—Mr W. Coleman, solicitor to the Auckland Electric Tramways Co., wrote that he was instructed to prepare the formal notice for publication in the newspapers of the intention of the local authorities to apply for an authorising order, and also the application to the Governor for such order. In order to avoid delay in obtaining the signatures, ne requested that the Council appoint as early as convenient a committee to ex r ecute the document. The Mayor moved that the Fnunce Committee be empowered to deal as necessary. Cr. Bradley objected to going further unless they had somereasonable idea as to the time of the completion of the work. Cr. Shalclrick also opposed dealing with the matter that night, and moved that the matter be referred to the Council in Committee to consider and report, which was agreed to An Appeal.—Mr W. H. Edward wrote intimating that he, together with other ratepayers, had at their own expense formed a footpath past their property in Trafalgar-street. He now requested the Council to remove a crown on the road which was dangerous, which when removed "would improve the road. Referred to the Streets Committee to deai with Finance.—The Town Clerk read his usual fortnightly statement, which showed that the Council debt was £200. Cr. Shaldrick asked whether the statement was a correct one. as it was rumoured that the Council was in credit £2000, tiesides which the 1/ rate had been collected and spent. The Mayor said that such a rumour was entirely false. The debit balance of the genera! fund was £200, but £98 of that amount had been spent In preparing blue metal for the streets i Or use next year, while as regards the current rate, although £900 was recoverable, none had yet been collected. Tender.—The tender of T. G. Bray to remove 100 loads of rough scoria froni Mount Smart reserve to the streets where directed was accepted nt 3/8 per load. Harbour Dredging.—The Mayor said thnt the people of Onehunga had urged the importance to the harbour of dredging, and as Mayor he had done nil in ills power to assist. The dredging work had now been completed up' to the wharf, and another week would have completed both sides. They were nware that shipping used the wharf very frequently, and accommodation was not available. Had the work been completed elitters and small steamers could lave used the inside of the wharf. He hnd written and telegraphed to Sir G. M. O'llorke to induce the Government to leave the dredger for n further fortnight to complete the work; but the Minister's reply was; ''Dredge must be returned to Westport, as Harbour Board, who are owners, require It." He regretted that the work could not be completed before its removal, but the Minister's reply in writing hud been forwarded. In concluding, His Wor- ' ship said he trusted he had carried out their wishes to the best interests of the borough.—The Mayor was thanked by the Council for the part he had taken in the interests of harbour improvements. Retiring Councillors.—The Mayor moved, "That it he recorded on the minutes of the Council thnt a cordial vote of thanks he tendered to Crs. Rowe. Stoune, and .7. Shnldrick, the retiring Councillors, for their services In the Council In assisting to promote the welfare of the borough.—The motion was agreed to.—Or. J. Slmhlrick, in returning thanks to the Council, said lie felt he would be wanting in his duty if he did not embrace the opportunity of thanking ]'is Worship find the Councillors for the consideration and courtesy he hnd received at their hands during his term of office. He wns not nwnre thnt he bad succeeded in doing anything of importance, but he had, however, endeavoured to assist those with wlio'ni he had been associated in municipal affairs, and lie could not refr.iin from neknowledging their universal courtesy. He wns standing his trial during the next fortnight, and was prepared to accept the verdict of the ratepayers for whom he, with his retiring colleagues, Crs. Rowe and Stoupe, had laboured. Burses? Roll.—Tn answer to a question, the Mayor stated thnt every person whose nnme was upon the burgess roll was entitled to vote nt the coming election, ana any threat of a £5 penalty was absmrd.The Town Clerk quoted from the Act, exnlnining that the £5 penalty referred to Ihose Ohlv who, when questioned ftt the polling-booth, gnve nn incorrect answer Mnnukau Water Sunply.-The Council n committee recommended that as no reply hnfl been received from the Mnnukau Water Rupplv Board, nil negotiations and offers from the Council to that body be terminated and thnt all resolutions on the books of the Council bearing on this matter be re-™inded.-Tne Mayor urged the Council to defer dealing with the question n week: but thfeWWMrtion fount! no favour, and the recommendation wns agreed to.
