RAILWAY ACCIDENT.
PORTER KILLED AT HELENS
VILLE
As announced in our -second edition j on Saturday, a railway shunter named 3 William Pace Hill was accidentallyl killed at Helensville railway station-on.| Saturday afternoon.. j • Further particulars show that the j accident' happened about 2.25 p.m., when a train was being shunted, j The engine, cars and one truck were at J the south end.of the station. Guard!
Syme, Porter F. Hotchen and deceased were doing the work, all three being on the western side of the line. When the truck was cut off the train and the engine began to push back Hill ran to cross the line in front of the truck and either tripped or slipped on the rail, falling in the direction be was running.. He turned on his back and tried /to kick, himself clear of the truck, but the. leading wheel caught his right leg below the knee, and in his struggle to clear himself he was caught by the trailing wheel, which passed over both legs above the knees. The trailing wheels were thus derailed. The deceased's body was drawn further under the truck, and the "bogie" of the first car passed over the centre of his body. The train was then stoppsd and-the deceased wyis picked'up. When the accident happened the truck was not going at more than a walking pace.
The station master (Mr Wright) immediately sent for Dr. Morris, who arrived a few minutes after the accident and pronounced life extinct.
A-n inquest was opened on Sunday and .adjourned till Wednesday next, at 10 a.m., the Coroner directing that the body might be interred in the meantime.
Deceased was eighteen years of age. His parents reside at Kihgsland, wither the body was taken on Sunday morning. •
