DEATH OF SYDNEY JAMES.

DUNEDIN, Wednesday,

Mr Sydney James, the well-known ex-secretary of the Dimedin Jockey Club, died to-day. He had but recently resigned owing to failing health, and had been appointed stipendiary steward to the D.J.C.

[Deceased was the senior racing secretary in the-Australasian colonies. He commenced his career as secretary prior to the discovery of gold- in Otago, N.Z.. and in the early gold diggings days acted as such at the Champion Race run on the old Silverstream course. Mr James landed In Adelaide, from England, in 1549, and arrived in Melbourne in 1852. He was one of the original members of the Melbourne Hunt, and a regular-follower of the Melbourne hounds (rom 1852 to 1859. Deceased ,was rtiueh -respected in Dimedin.] ' . > , . ' ;
