Stubborn street fighting continues. Four thousand armed Christian converts are assisting the Allies. Mr Conger, the American Minister, declares that the Boxers were used as a pretence for the attack on the Legations, which was wholly a Governmental movement directed by the Dowager's confidential adviser. He states that a desperate effort was made to annihilate the Legations on the night preceding the relief, but the attacks ceased when the ' Allies entered the city. Sir Claude Mac Donald states that the Chinese Government broke every engagement. They did not furnish the Legations with food, but once offered vegetables, which were refused. A letter ha? been discovered addressed by General Yung Lit (o General Tungfuhsiang, swearing to murder all foreigners with the aj'd of a million Boxers. Tungfuhsiang agreed to participate. > Large forces from the Houan province are massing in the rear of the Allies. It is "believed that the Pekin- . Tientsin telegraph line is interrupted.
