DREDGING THE MANUKAU
Much dissatisfaction is expressed at > Onelmnga at the report that the ; dredge'now employed there in deepening the channel near the wharf is to be taken away South before the I work is completed. To-day Dr. W. R. Erson, Mayor of Onehunga, voicing the sentiments of himself and the residents of the district, addressed the following letter to the executive of the Auckland Chamber of Commerce, which met this afternoon: "[ am authoritatively informed that/"•'■'! orders have been given to remove tho '' I dredge from the Manukau Harbour , after the 31st inst./ If such'a course of action is taken the work will ue absolutely unfinished, and the expense incurred hitherto without practical benefit to the port. The Harbourmaster informs me that if the dredge is allowed to remain here until tne end of September the work can tie completed, and by having both side 3 j of th.c Onehunga wharf deepened it will allow adequate accommodation for the shipping of the port. May L ask the cordial assistance of your chamber, and immediate action therein in bringing pressure upon the Government to see that this work is com- ; pleted before the dredge'leaves our i port.—Yours, faithfully, W. R. CLOSE- ■ ERSON, Mayor of Onehunga." . \M Dr. Erson has also wired to Sir, Maurice O'Rorke, M.H.R., asking him to try arid bring the influence of the^ r.iembers for the-North, to bear on this subject, -with a view to favourably m- ,< fiuencing the Government. :
