THE NEW TARIFF.

The following telegram hap been received from the Premier by Mr A; J. Entrican, the chairman of the meeting of wholesale grocers and others, in reference to the new Customs tariff:—

"Matter referred to in your telegram of yesterday will be brought before the Cabinet on my return from, Christchurch."

The following telegram has been received from Mr Scoullar, of Dunedin: —"Vesta Company shut down pending settlement of tariff. None in stock."

WELLINGTON, this day.

A conference of candle manufacturers opened here this morning to discuss the proposed reduction of duty on candles. The proceedings were private, but resolutions will be communicated to the press later on. The Chamber of Commerce meets this afternoon to consider the tariff alterations. | ■

At a meeting".of,the Chamber of Commerce it was resolved to adopt the resolution passed by the Christchurch Chamber, calling attention to the injustice of putting" the reduced < tariff into immediate operation and suggesting that it should not come into force until January next. The Chairman said, with respect to the Premier's argument that those who were now objecting said nothing of the rise in value of their stocks when the tariff Avas increased, that the Premier would iind the rise did not come into force for a long time. :^f attempts were made to impose it c\ stocks in hand purchasers would have resisted, just as they insisted on reduction when the duty was lowered.
