DREDGING MANUKAU.
At last night's meeting of the One* hunga Borough Council Cr. J. Shal« drick asked His Worship the Mayor (Dr. W. R. Close Erson) if he had reliable information as to the prtobable removal of the dredge. The speakeS had heard that it was proposed that the dredge should leave at the end ol this month. If that were done it would be a great pity, for.valuable work and improvements had already, been made, so much so indeed that the Takapuna, drawing- 12 feet, came alongside the wharf on Saturday, morning at dead low water. The. Mayor said that he had been informed •that instructions wefe given to prepare the dredge hopper for removal to Westport by the Snd of this month. If such a course of action wastaken he was advised that all the good wofK now performed by the dredge would, be practically useless, and that he intended, as Mayor of the town, to at once communicate not only with, the1 Auckland Chamber of Commerce, but! also with the Hon. Sir G. M. O'Rorke, asking aim to solicit the assistance of the Auckland members that the work already commenced in the Manukau should be completed by the dredge, before its removal. He had been informed that if the work was "left tin* finished in its present stage, all the. work done would-be useless.
