CAMBRIDGE

CAMBRIDGE, Monday.

There is an extraordinary demand for milking- cows here at the present time, and no mutter w.nat kind of animal it is that ia offered, it Bells, as long as it id a cow. i<'ully a hundred were uucred at Mr W. J. Hunter's satu here on Saturday, and nearly all were quilted at very satisfactory prices. The uuws maue from £4 to ill, and heifers from £-; 5/ to x.i L<J/. No matter if ihu Horn is ringed up to the tip, it sells. Onlves arc uiso making phenomenal price;*, and what could hardly be given away a year or two agu now make from xi to £2; and yearling steers on Saturday brought £3 1/. iiy tilts time they are bullocks they will bo worm a low pounds, > U tney are to, pay the graziers. Some little time since a petition was got up by the soulers neur Fencourt to nave the name of the Hautapu railway station altered, as their letters were delayed a day uy being' sent to that address, whereas they get them at Cambridge. The settlers at the other end ot tho parish, near the Hautapu Post Orfice, got up a counter petition, asking that the name remain unaltered, and they liavo proved succedsiful lor tlie railway authorities have, decided the name oC the station shall remain as at present. The annual meeting of the Chrysanthemum Society was held on Thursday evening- last, but owing to the very wei weather the attendance was not nearly so large as, usual. Unfortunately the President, Mr T. Wells, was unavoidably absent, and tho chair was occupied bj Mr W. F. Buckland. The report and balanco sheet were of a most encouraging nature, the latter showing' a credit oi over £40. This is exceptionally good, for tho Society has had several heavy expenses during the past year or so, having purchased a new top to a marquee, otc. It was with great regret that the resignation of the President was accepted, for Mr Wells has occupied that position since the Inception of tho Society, Indeed, he was the lather of it. The following- resolution was unanimously agreed to: That this meeting desires to express to their late president (.T. Wells, Esq.) ita deep regret at his retirement from the executive of the Cambridge Chrysanthemum Society, and further tenders its warmest thanks to him for all the past services which he has rendered the Society from its inception to the present time, and trusts that at no very distant date the founder of the Cambridge Chrysanthemum Society may again be enabled to take an actual part in projecting its welfare. Dr. Roberts was elected president: Mr Buckland, treasurer; Mr Mcbermott. secretary. The retiring members of the committee were re-elected and Mr C. Roberts fills the place vacated by Mr Empfon. The schedule of prizes will be much altered this, year, and will give every inducement for Auckland growers to compete.
