PONSONBY WIN THE CHAMPIONSHIP.
The chr.r:plonship matches for 1900, under the auspices of the New Zealand Lacrosse Association, were brought to an end on Saturday afternoon, when Ponsonby defeated Suburbs and secured the premiership. The winning team's record is a brilliant one indeed, never once have they suffered defeat. Out of 12 matches played, 11 have been won, and one drawn, and their success was well earned, and very popular. The Grafton club Is runner up. 6 points behind the champions. Their defeat on Saturday at the hands of the North Shore club was,a great surprise to everybody. This was* probably accounted for by the fact that two of their regular players were absent. The North Shore te"am all round showed decided improvement. Little interest was attached to the game between Grey Lynn and Parnell, which was won by the former after a very close struggle. At half time all the players assembled in the long room in the pavilion, where a very pleasing presentation in the shape of a, handsome marble clock, suitably inscribed, was made to Mr K. J. Fenn, one of the founders of the same of lacrosse here, who is about to be married, and who is leaving here shortly. The presentation speech was made by Mr Philip Luckie, a member of the managing: council. He referred to the many sterling qualities Mr Fenn possessed, and concluded by wishing him and his inteir'..-ci happlnoss and success. The recipient briefly thanked lacrosseurs for the g-ift, and at the conclusion came In for prolonged cheering. Afternoon tea was dispensed by ladles from the Grey Lynn district. PONSONBY (9 goals) V. SUBURBS (nil). Peacock and Poublster faced off. 1-inict-ly afterwards the Suburbs' attack gecurwl the rubber and dashed it up the field and made the opposite goal look dangerous, till Noton relieved with a timely throw. Peacock obtained command at midfltld, and pave his attack an excellent opening, of which good use was made. McCoy sent a difficult one in, which Thomson failed to stop. Ponsonby kept up a hot fusillade, and after some tricky work, Lundon secured their second goal. A little later first quarter was sounded. Nearly tho whole of the next quarter Suburbs were hnrcl defending, despite good defence by Morrin. N. Brown and Owen. The bluo nnd blacks, by Lundon's< aid, added two more goals to their total, which at half time was four goals against Suburbs nil. Second Half: Foubister got tho bast of the face, and made a clever ooening. and a score seemed certain, but Walker was too selfish. White cleared Ponsonby's lines in good style, and Peacock and Davies Indulged in useful passing, which xiltimfitely ended in Anderson shooting a clinking goal from n long range. The Suburbs, hearted by Morrin. Rendall and Allen, gave the blue and black backs a warm five minutes defending, finally they were repulsed, chiefly through Nolan's agency. After a few minutes of even play. Short secured on the wing and passed to Anderson who successfully shot at j goal, bringing Ponsonby's score to six goals. Then change for the last quarter was sounded. Suburbs nearly scored on two occasions, but inaccurate shooting was their defect. Then play, was cloae to their goal till cease play was announced. Ponsonby's total was increased to nine goals. Lundon secured two more, and Anderson one. Mr W. B. Eyre was a capital referee.
