ALLIES WELCOMED BY

HONGKONG, August 18
The Commissioner of Customs at Cheefoo has cabled that Pekin was relieved on the night of the 15th. . Prince Ching welcomed the Allies. •: The Imperial Court, Avith Prince Tuan and other Manchus, went to Shansi on the 11th, while the Kansu troops went towards the south-west hoping to attract the Allies and prevent them from pursuing the Court.. The Chinese excavated 10,000 tons of earth at Hosinwu, with the object of cutting the banks of the Peiho. -Three days' additional work would have enabled them to inundate the country sufficient .to arrest the advance of the Allies.
