JAPAN AND CHINA.
JAPANESE OPPOSED TO PARTITION.
ANXIETY ABOUT COEEA,
(Received 11.5 a.m.)
SYDNEY, this day.
( The Sdyney Herald's Toklo correspondent states that Japan is thoroughly opposed to the partition of China, although several Japanese politicians believe partition is inevitable. The Emperor's reply to the Chinese Emperor's despatch was that Japan is committed to modern civilisation, and cannot entertain a racial appeal from conservative China, although fully sympathising with China's difficulties.
The Japanese press thoroughly endorse the tone of the reply. The old idea t^ht Japan should head the yellow race alliance arranged against Europe is scouted. Notwithstanding that the conservation and integrity of the Chinese Empire is considered allimportant, the Japanese press is much .disquieted with reference to the position in Corea. They hold this year will
decide whether Corea is to be Russian or Japanese. The latter's fleet is fully organised and ready for action.
