ST. JOHN'S WESLEYAN.

Yesterday morning the Rev. G. B. Monro, of Remuera, preached at St. John's Wesleyan Church, Ponsonby, on the subject of individual responsibility to God. He.referred to the Sabbath desecration and said the remedy must lie in a modification of the demands of trade. He deplored the*tfact that the Sabbath was being largely tampered with by increased pleasure and amusement and the introducing of secular things into its sacred hours. Sabbath desecration was rapidly increasing in the form of excursions and entertainments called sacred, but which were really an indirect attempt to evade the law and make money. Mr Monro also referred to the vice of intemperance, and expressed satisfaction at the united and determined opposition to the attempts of the Government to thrust the drink upon the natives of the King Country in face of a solemn pledge. In conclusion, Mr Monro spoke of the gambling- evil, and advocated the building up of a sound, healthy public opinion on the subject j of gambling and showing the young j men of the colony that it meant finan- j cial, moral and spiritual ruin. ■ j
