NEW ZEALAND GRAND NATIONAL MEETING.
t£y Telegraph.-Presg Association.)
CHRISTCHURCH, Thursday.
The attendance was not so good as on the opening day, and the totallsator investments, £11.368, showed a decrease of £550 as compared with the second day of last year's meeting. Several bookmakers suspected of laying totallsator odds were summoned before the stewards. ■> ■ .-«,. The victory of the Auckland horse Record Reign In the Grand National Hurdle Race was a-most P*Pf* ™c; The performance of the son of Castor was particularly brilliant. He carried his 12.12 and won in a common canter in time which is nearly 6sec faster than that registered by Couranto in the same race and which stood as the record. Record Reign was heartily cheered on returning to the enclosure. Coeur de Lion and torpina ran good races, but the others with the exception of Kaimate, were beaten off when half the journey had been completed. Ilex refused at the first fence at the top of the straight) which Torpina negotiated just in advance of Record Reign and Kaimate, Light being last. Running down the straight ■ Torpina drew out a little from Record Reign and Kaimate, the three jumping the fence opposite the stand in the order named, with Coeur de Lion next, just in front of Hauriri, whllo Light was still last. Passing Cutts' Torpina still showed the way to Kaimate and Record Reign, while Coeur de Lion was next, three lengths away, with Haurlri, Roller, Halcyon and Dundee following in the order named. At the next two fences Torpina barely showed out in. front of Kaimate and Record Reign, while Coeur de Lion had moved up nearer to the leaders. At this point the pace began to tell on Dundee, Halcyon, Roller, Hauriri, and Light, as after passing the five-furlong post they fell away beaten, and this example was followed by Kaimate a couple of furlongs further on. In the next furlong Torpina gave way to Record Reign and Coeur de Lion, the last-named entering the straight with an advantage of a length, which Record Reign gradually reduced, and the pair jumped the last fence together, with Torpina, three fengths 'away, third. Once on the flat Record Reign easily held his opponents, and ran home a comfortable, winner, by half a length from Coeur de Lion, with Torpina three lengths away, third, and Dundee fourth, Kaimate fifth, Halcyon sixth, Roller seventh, and Light last.
