THE KENNEL.
(By Cariis.)
Auckland fanciers are beginning to wonder who is really going to'judge the Wellington Kennel Club's coming* show. The "New. Zealand Field" first announced that it was definitely decided for Mr Freeman Lloyd, of Sydney. A late edition says that Mr De ,I_.tour,' of Maatertoh, has been finally selected, whilst the latest announces that Mr L. Wark, of Christchurch, and Mr J. Horrax, of Wellington, will adjudicate, the former taking collies. When the numbers are up we shall probably know who has judged. Anyhow, I wish the Club a very successful show, which, according' to reports, Is pretty certain to be the cas.e. I think the officials we,re a bit premature In announcing Mr Freeman Lloyd's name in the schedule before definitely arranging with him, as it is. certainly misleading fanciers; ,but I presume they, were at the time under the Impression that certain terms would be accepted. j
»From private information to hand J learn that Mr F. Rogen, the well-known Southern collie breeder, .Is having a rather lengthy slay In Melbourne, where he Went on.a visit to the late big show; he Is not expected home till next Saturday week. I notice, on looking over the prize-list, that,' besides winning so many prizes in collies, he was very successful in several of the poultry sections; •
I learn from; Mr R. J. Parry, the hon. secretary of the local Kennel Club, that there is every prospect of a big success at the coming show. Mr Freeman Lloyd, now, well known In Australia, has been engaged to judge all classes, and the entries for the various breeds are coming In well. They; close to:morrow, and Mr Parry will be In attendance all day at the Metropolitan Hotel. ■ . - ,
I understand that Messrs Wark and Barland's well-known collie, Armsbearer, had a very rough passage across to Melbourne, and, only, arrived a few hours before having to appear in the show ring. Under these circumstances he certainly would be at a big disadvantage, and there Is some; excuse for him only:'., getting amongst the y.H.C.'fl.. ' " ".
The total number of entrles.for the Canterbury Kennel "Club's show is.-, 253, probably about 100 less than Auckland wlll.be; at least, I hope 'So. -. 'f
The Hawke's Bay show is reported to have been a great success. I have not seen the prize-list, but I understand that the most successful winners were Dr. Newman, , Caselberg, Horrax, Hunter, Smith, Stanton, Hamln, Goodall, -arid St.'Hill. .. , .',: . '~"','■
Mr Clifford Bramah,./ who. judged the late-Masterton show, In his published 'report/ "speaks highly of a young collie, .Viking, owned'by Mr J. Rennle. He says he Is a handsome^sable and white, with good head and" ears, beautiful eyes, well placed, and the whole head full of true collie expression, a. good front; splendid legs and feet, coat very dense, with plenty of good pily undercoat, which' is so often lacking in New Zealand-bred collies. (I quite agree with'Mr Clifford on this latter point.) Mr Bailey's bull terrier,Caesar,:is spoken of,as a very good one', with the" best, head the judge has" yet Seen in New Zealand, but, although the other dogs were fair all round, there, was nothing else very special; The "New Zealand Field" is responsible for the following: — A meeting of the Executive of the New Zealand Kennel Club was held last, week;"preserit, Messrs McLean (In the chair); Clater,. T. Jamieson, Orton Stevens, Newton, Minogue, Grenslde, and the secretary.; The Canterbury and Auckland X.C.'s schedules were passed subject to slight alterations being made. The "Maori Princess" case advanced another stage, and will come up again for discussion later on. • The Photographic Competition of;-five classes in connection with the Wellington X.C.'s show contains prizes of £1 and 10/ in each class, supplemented by £.1 V special prizes In each class. Entries close on 17th instant with Mr T. M. Hardy, Lambton Quay, from whom particulars may be had. , '• The annual general meeting pf the New Zealand Kennel Club will be held on next Friday, the 24th inst. ■ y
