COLONEL POLE-PENTON'S DEFENCE REPORT.

Sir,—The report of Colonel Pole-Penton, R.A., on the/Defences of the Colony," certainly has not the merit of brevity. The matter contained in it, might well be boiled down to as many lines: as there are columns without leaving much residue of;importance.: ■'
The statement Says that, had it not been for the war, all the troops would have been armed with .303 .weapons,, and then goes on to state that magazine arms are on the way from England. How are we to take this? ■
Not so very long ago the. colony was put to the expense, against all expert opinion, of purchasing obsolete Martinis, and now that the contract for the supply of the single-loading rifle. .303 Is about to be fulfilled we are Informed that magazine arms are on order from England., .yery shortly/ when • 'Banbownwi,-;» laj
Russe" does come along, we shall have a»k'S| many weapons to struggle with, and flnd^a correct ammunition for, as the famous -,l Manchu Legion. How about Wellington?
