The Parnell Literary and Debatingsociety held ita usual fortnightly meeting - -. last night in the Schoolroom, Parnell.■■, There was a large attendance of meinberß , and visitors. The subject, which wW . "Woman's Proper Sphere in Modern > Life," was warmly debated, and at the ;- conclusion of the discussion, by a show of hands,, it was plainly evident that th« ladies, who were .well represented,■■'hw*.; the best of- it. The meeting enfled with a hearty vote af thanks being passed! to the two gentlemen who championed the rt" • : spectlve sides. ;
The Excelsior Mutual Improvement So*. ■ ciety held their third meeting in the New- • ton Congregational .Church last evening, i Rev. F. Warner presided. An essay on , "War" was read by Mr W. Broberg, ■written by Mr A. Miller in a masterly styleHalf an hour's criticism was allowed1' after the reading, and a very infstruetlve', '. and enjoyable evening was brought' to a close by the Benediction being pronounced. A meeting of the Presbyterian Blders' Association was held in St. Stephen's1*)" Monday night, Mr R. B. Heriot in the: chair. It was decided to appoint a deputation to wa)t on the Presbytery, recom* '< mending them to appoint a clergyman to/. visit the country districts. The Rev. JMitchell, of Hamilton, gave a very inter* ■ - esting paper .on . the "Martyrdom .0* ■ Stephen, and the Trials of the Earl? ( Christian Church." A vote of thanks WB|, accorded to the rev. lecturer."
