A special meeting of the borough-Council was held last evenlg to consider the report by a committee appointed to provide accommodation for the Council and the oflicers, the municipal buildings having been destroyed by lire. Considerable feeling was manifested in the matter, and the whole ot the Council were present. The Committee recommended adding a lean-to at the back of the public hall at a cost of £85, and a strong room, i.25, making the total sum received for insurance on old building. In committee this was carried by 4 to 1, but one recanted, and in the Council th 9 proposal was negatived by 7 to 8. Consloor able discussion ensued, and eventia'iv It wa<? decided by 7 to 2 to rebuild on the old site at a cost of about £210. It is hopod the Council will be able to put up a noat little office that will be a credit to the town, Burrounded by a garden. The following committee was appointed to get plans and estimate and report to the next ordinary meeting:—The Mayor, and Councillors Wells and Ferguson. This unfortunate fire revives an old feud, between the top portion of the town versus the lower, out It is evident the ratepayers' look at mat ters in a different light, and now intead doing what is best for the whole.
