POLICE COURT.

(Before Mr H. W. Brabant, S.M.)

- Drunkenness. —For this offence William Williams and John Conway were each fined ss, in default 24 hours' hard labour, and Mary Ann O'Keefe £ 1 or seven "days. Nicholas Heath, who failed to appear, was ordered to forfeit hla bail money (£1). A first offender was convicted and discharged. • A Summary Sentence. —A youth named Patrick Lynch was convicted of using obscene language and wilfully exposing his person in a public place. Constable Payne said the accused was under the influence of liquor at the time, but was not drunk enough to lock up for drunkenness. His Worship after hearing evidence Said it was a remarkably gross case and one. which merited imprisonment. Accused would be sentenced to two months' hard labour —one month on each charge.

Adjourned.—John Shanahan, Robert Purcell and Edward Lardner were charged with wilfully trespassing on the premises of Fredk. Chas. Myers," in Duke-street; also with wilfully damaging two doors, value 17s 6d, the property of Fredk. Myers. Mr Reed appeared for the accused. On his application the cases' wer* adjourned for a week. Bail was allowed, each accused in one surety of £10. /. ,

A. Prohibited Person.—Caroline Smith was fined £1 for being found in the Rising Sun Hotel during the currency' of. a prohibition order issued against her. . •

A Stray Horse. —John Schischka was fined "£1 and costs for allowing a horse to stray in Union-street.

Loitering in Queen-street. —Tobias Tobias was charged that on July 21st he. did by loitering obstruct the thoroughfare in Queen-street to the inconvenience of passers by after being requested by Sergeant Treanor to move on. It was stated, that defendant was one of a number=pf bookmakers who loitered about Queenstreet and obstructed the thoroughfare,; owing to the betting public collecting round them. Defendant pleaded not guilty, but was convicted on the evidence, and fined £2 and costs. . Daniel McLeod, through Mr Reed, pleaded "guilty to a. similar charge, and was also fined £2 and costs. George Hayes was fined £1 and costs for loitering.

Alleged Assault.—Bert. Johnson cab driver, was charged with assaulting William Kerr, 'bus driver, by striking him oii the leg with a whip. Mr Reed appeared for the prosecution and. Mr Parr for the defendant, who pleaded not guilty. A number of' witnesses were called on either side, and the case was proceeding when we went to press. .'.'.',■ ■ , ...■ •
