L. D. NATHAN AND CO. V. ARTHUR
H. NATHAN.
This annual fixture was played-on Saturday at Ellerslie, the contesting teams accompanied by their friends driving out in brakes, waving banners with the respective legends of the two firms inscribe ed thereon. The match resulted In a win for the Standards by 9 points to 3. Morrin, at threequarter, captained the team, and played a rattirng game, and Neville, centre forward, also distinguished himself. The scores consisted of three tries gained by Stephenson and Cummings, threequarters, and Kean, wing forward, who made a capital run after preventing a potted goal. For the Reliables Goldwater and Stlchbury, at three quarter, formed the mainstay of the team, while Cnro, centre half, was also useful, and Verrall, wing forward, had the honour of securing the only try, after a good run. After the match an adjournment was made to the Ellersllo Hotel for dinner, which was served in good style. The chair was occupied by Mr T. C. Schnackenberg, who also proposed the first toast of the evening, "The Queen." The musical items were capitally rendered, and received with acclamation, the most popular being those with a good chorus, in which all could join. The gentlemen contributing songs were Messrs Warnock, Bickerton, Stichbury, Boulton and Feldman, the latter delishtIng the audience wit han original composition descriptive of the game. The way in which he brought in the names of some of the prominent players caused immense amusement. Mr Hay was appreciated in seve^vl comic songs, while Mr Bates chose an appropriate patriotic song, "The Lads in Navy Blue," to follow the toast proposed by Mr Foley, "The Army and Navy." Mr Schnackenberg also sang patriotic songs, altering the last verses to introduce the Boer war and the China war. The toast of the "Winning House" was in charge of Mr C. P. Stichbury, and in a neat speech he complimented the opposing team on their victory, and hoped that next time the Reliables" would have that honour. Mr Hay in responding thanked them for receiving the toast with musical honours, as did also Mr Kilmartin, when the toast 'The Losing House" was proposed by Mr Canham. "The Referee" was similarly honoured by a speech from Mr Beedell, and Mr Gittos thanked the teams for the manner in which his decisions had been received. The rest of the programme included recitations by Mr Verrall and Mr Neville, and after votes of thanks to Mr Mclntosh, the accompanist, and to the Chairman the members of the two housesTlned hands in "Auld Lang Syne " and then dispersed, getting away for home shortly before half past nine, af?er spending an enjoyable and sociable evening.
