AQUATICS
The yacht Ngaru recently changed hands, being purchased by 'Mr Arch. Buchanan from Mr A. Gifford.
The English "Yachtsman" in a recent issue said:—:"Tn the American, and a certain section of the British press, Sir T. Lipton is a perennial source of 'copy.' It is Interesting to know that the Royal Cork Y.C. .will father his next challenge,, for [the club is the oldest yacht club in the world, and would be a, fitting holder of the America Cup if it should change hands. AH that is a vei*y suitable subject for comment, but yachtsmen would think better of Sir ■T. Lipton's claim to- be a sportsman" if he did not confine his racing efforts exclusively to matches for the America Cup. This season might have been made highly interesting by the appearance of Shamrock in competition with Sybarite and Meteor, and there does not appear to be any reason for her absence. Sir T. Lipton, however, appears quite content to be regarded merely as a Cup
challenger, not as a yachtsman, and to prefer to shower his favours on the American people rather than on his own countrymen. It is to the credit of the N.Y.Y.C. tha.t no possible cause of complaint arose during the late Cup races, for they had an absolutely free hand to do whatever they pleased, and the challenger would never have risked his popularity by the semblance of a grumble.'' At any rate (says a contemporary) Sir Thomas Lipton jumped into the breach when it was necessary to find a challenger for the World's Cup, and if he never did anything else for yachting in his life, he cannot be said to be anything but a sport of the first water.
