AMUSEMENTS. -.'.,-♦: : .. . ,' AUCKLAND LIBDBRTAFBL. The Auckland Lledertafel gave their second concert of the i^resent season In the Choral Hall last evening in the presence of a very large audience, and one that was quick to appreciate the excellence of the musical programme set before them. Encores were demanded for many of the items, and the programme was considerably, lengthened. All the part songs were greatly appreciated and deservedly so. for they were all very well rendered, showing the .effect of .good training. Among these , the best were perhaps "A Wet Sheet and a Flowing Sea," "Hymn to Cynthia," "My Pipe" (with solo by Mr G. M. Reid), and "The Dance." The audience demanded an encore for this last, but the hour was late. The humorous element was supplied in the part songs ■ "The Goslings" and "April Showers," the first of which was repeated, while "Hie Thee Shallop" with Mr M. Trenwith as soloist was an excellent number. Among the soloists, Miss Maude Pratt carried off the honours with her two songs "Vainka's Song" . and "To-night and To-morrow," for both of which she had to respond. She was also the recipient of-a handsome floral bouquet. Miss Pratt was in splendid voice, both of her numbers being sung with fine taste and expression, while the intricate runs in "Vainka'"s Song" were given with perfect ease and grace. Mr W. Astley was very successful in his two songs "Kathleen Mavourneen" and "Thou Art Passing Hence," and had to respond to the latter number. Herr Kreutzer contributed . two violin solos in a very finished manner, "Tannhauser" and "Cossack Dance." He plays with a fine rich tone v and technique and expression are alike admirable. The former selection, including the famous march, echoed the glories of the great opera. Mr Arthur Tov/sey, who conducted and accompanied throughout with his usual ability, played two organ solos, "Splendente re Deus" (Mozart) and "Grand Offertoire in Ami" (.Batiste), with the skill for which he is so well known. LITERARY AND HISTORICAL ASSOCIATION. At a cpuricil meeting of the Literary and Historical Association, held yesterday afternoon, the president announced rha |i:l[>u?.'B that Will be read at the monthly literary evenings. The presided. Mr. h. A. Mackechnle, and the register wore appi>'«:«Hl a committee to report on the cose .of an getting up an " Annual " at the end of the year. A very pleasing function took place at the Auckland Gas Works, Customstreet, on Friday evening, August 3, when Mr G. Cummane and Miss Blewden presented the Auckland Gas Works Athletic Club with a handsome silk banner with the monogram of the club embroidered thereon. Mr Cummane in a happy speech presented the banner, which was accepted on behalf, of the club by Mrs Suggate, wife of the club's president. The- president, of the club suitably responded, thanking the donors for the handsome gift. On the motion of Mr James Lawford, seconded ■by Mr F. Williams, it was unanimously decided to elect Mr Cummane a life member of the club. Hearty cheers were then givffh, for the banner, the donors thereof, and for Mrs. Suggate for her kindness in attending the meeting. . To-night! To-night!
