At nine o'clock last evening the sixroomed residence di Mr L. Hill, situated on the Long- Drive, St. Helier's Bay, was burned to the ground. Mr Hill was hanging a picture with the use of a step ladder when the cord of the ladder broke, the ladder falling over the table, on which v china kerosene lamp was standing. The lamp was smashed to atoms and in a, moment the room was in flames. Some neighbours assembled to suppress the fire, but nothing could be done, and the house was burned lo the ground in very quick time. All the effects were lost, save the bedding of one room. The house was insured for £240 1 in the N.Z. Insurance office, und,;the. outbuildings for £10 in' the ,snme»pffice. The insurance on the: furniture is not yet known.
