STATEMENT BY
MR BRODRICK
SHANGHAI TO BE DEPENDED
LONDON. August 3
Mr Brodrick, Under-Secretary for Foreign Affairs, was cheered on announcing in the House of Commons the unity of the Powers with a' view to relieving the Legations, and establishing the supremacy of t.he Western world. . . Great Britain, he saifl, would cooperate with the Viceroys to preserve order in the Yangtse Valley, and Shanghai would be defended whatever may occur, hence the sending of. A Third Brigade from India. Great Britain, he added, would; resolutely' opppsq the .partition of China as endangering trade, hut there was no reason to believe' the. other Powers dissented from this view. Britain felt that the future government rmist be Chinese forthe Chinese. ; The "Daily Express" states that. Mr Hay has urged Li Hung Chang to advise the Pekin authorities'to place themselves in friendly communication with, the Allies.
