THE AUCKLAND CANAL.
(By Telegraph— Parliamentary Reporter.^
WELLINGTON, this day. |
Mr .Bollard asked the Government in the House yesterday, whether, in. considering- the construction of 'a canal at the Tamaki portage be- -: fween the harbours of Onehunga and Auckland, they will also take into consideration the construction of a canal at the Whau portage, with I the view of ascertaining which is the. better of the two schemes. He said,,,' though it was improbable that the proposed canal would be completed in his life-time, yet it was, .so far as regards cost, a mere bagatelle. The Minister of Works said it would' not be a bit of use to nfake the canal, ; because, to be of any use, it would have to admit the largest vessels afloat, and a very comprehensive scheme would be necessary. Th<y route for a ship canal was thoroughly , examined several years ago, and it was found that the work would be of a very expensive character. It would be necessary to excavate 11,000,000 yards of earth and rock, and the cost.7 would be enormous. He did not thinkf| ♦.here was any probability of the Government tradertaking the- work ■in question; ;
