RAILWAY TO KARAKA BAY.
(By Telegraph—Parliamentary Reporter.)
WELLINGTON,. this day.
Mr Bollard asked the Minister for Public Works in the House yesterday whether a survey has been made of a branch line of railway from the Kalpara line at Avondale to Kanaka Bay, on the Manukau. He saidhe understood that_ during the recess a survey had been made of the line for a distance of about a. mile and thi-ee-quarters. If the railway were made to Karaka Bay, steamers could leave there for the South in all times of the tide. Though they all hoped to see the North Island Main Trunk railway being completed the line he proposed to Karaka would in the meantime be a great public convenience. As a survey had been made he hoped the Government would give some idea of the cost. / The Minister of Works said the proposal made by the hon. member for Eden was to divert the whole trade of Onehunga. Besides the railway to Karaka it would be necessary to provide accommodation % for vessels, and he could, not. see what benefit could be derived from the work. It was known that a mud bank existed in the Karaka Bay. somewhat similar to the one in Onehunga harbour. A much better thing would be to improve the approach to the wharf at Onehunga. No survey had been made of the route of the proposed section.
Mr Bollard persisted that there had been a. survey.
