CITY COUNCIL.
A special meeting of the members of the City Council was held last evening for the purpose of considering tenders and other matters connected with the auxiliary water supply. There were present: The Mayor (Mr David Goldie), Councillors Y. Warren, R. Salmon, R. Tudehope, J. H. Hannan, A. J. Entrican, j. Hewson, F. B. Eaume, C. J. Parr, J. Stichbury, A. Kidd, J. Paterson and R. Farrell, also Mr J. Carlaw, waterworks engineer, Messrs Metcalfo and Wilson, engineers, and Mr R. Atkinson. ' J
His Worship said before proceeding with the special business there were two resolutions he wished to submit. He moved "That His Excellency the Governor be asked to forward to Her Most Gracious Majesty the Queen the very sincere expression of condolence and' respectful sympathy of the Mayor, Councillors and citizens of the City of Auckland in the sad bereavement which has befallen Her Majesty by the death of His Royal Highness the late Duko of Edlnborough, and their earnest hope that Her Majesty may receive strength and comfort from on High to support her in the time of her very sad bereavement."
Cr. Kidd seconded the motion, which was adopted in silence.
His Worship further moved, "That the Town Clerk be instructed to convey to His Honor Mr Justice Conolly the sincere condolence of the Mayor and Councillors in the sad bereavement he has sustained. The Council feel that the removal by death of his good lady is a loss tnat will be felt by the whole community, and that the sympathy of every citizen is extended to His Honor and family in this time of their greut soirow. The Council therefore desire* to give expression to the deep regret felt on all sides in the irreparable loss sustained by His Honor. Cr. Baume seconded this motion, which was also agreed to.
The Council then went into committee to consider the special business for which the meeting was called. Upon resuming the following resolutions passed in committee were adopted by the Council:-1. "That no tender be accepted for the pumping machinery (Canty s Creek scheme)." 2. "That the Waterworks Committee be Instructed to proceed at once with the details necessary for calling alternative tenders (In wood or iron) for works in connection with the auxiliary supply from Nihotupu, with power to employ the necessary labour and that the Legal Committee take all necessary steps to secure the land needed for works, reservoirs reservation of water, etc." On the motion of Mr Salmon, seconded by the Mayor, the Council unanimously agreed, "That the thanks of this Council be tendered to Mr Atkinson for his very great liberality in giving so much of his land for'waterworks purposes, free.of cost, to the citizens, and also for the large amount of time that he has given In connection with the scheme, with a view to assist the Council in coming to a proper conclusion upon the question."
