THE AMERICAN COMMANDER

Brigadier General Adna B. Chaffee. who has been assigned to command the American forces landed in China, is to be given all the soldiers he may need to protect the lives and property of Americans. Like his chief, Gen. Miles, Chaffee Avon his present rank by merit, like him rising from the ranks to a high command. General Chaffee was born in Ohio, April 14, 1848, and began his military service in July, 1861, when he enlisted in the regular Finny as a private in the Sixth United States Cavalry. For gallant and meritrions* conduct he was made sergeant and then on up through the intermediate grades until he was commissioned captain for his services .in the battle of Dinwidie, March 31, 18G5. The Indian campaigns from 1807 to 18S2 brought him up to" lieutenant-colonel. He. went to Cuba with General Shatter and commanded a brigade of the American forces at Santiago, especially distinguishing hirnsef in the capture of "El Caney," which practically ended the siege of Santiago. He was recommended for special distinction by General Lawton. On May 8, 1899, he was made colonel of the Eighth Cavalry, and about the same time commissioned brigadier general of volunteers. Soon after he was made major general of volunteers. From December, 1898,^ until a short, time ago Gen. Chaffee served as chief of staff to the Governor-General of Cuba, and later in the office of the adjutant^general at Washington.
