AUCKLAND BOWLING CLUB.

ANNUAL MEETING,

The annual meeting of the Auckland Bowling Club was held on July 13th, in the club pavilion. Mr Hugh Campbell, (president) presided. The secretary (Mr A. Hegman) read the annual report. Several visits were received from sister clubs, and return visits paid. Five matches were played, and the club was only once defeated. It was hoped that more of these inter-club matches would take place next season. The membership of the club was 140, instead of 142 last year. The committee regretted the loss by death of a very esteemed member, Capt. Harris. Indebtedness was expressed to Mr G. M. Handcock (green superintendent) and 'to Mr W. Smith (the caretaker) for the excellent condition of the green, as also to Mr M. McCallum for presenting the club with a pair of patent screw measuring callipers. The services of the ladies' were, as usual, very valuable, especially during tournament week, in so kindly and willingly responding to the call made upon them. The treasurer (Mr J. Carlaw) read the balance sheet. It stated.that the year's receipts, including balance carried forward, were £494 3/10, and the expenditure £329 13/9, leaving a balance of £164 10/1. Of that surplus. £72 was devoted to extinguishing 36 debentures. The club's share of the recent tournament expenses (£7O) was more than met, the handsome sum of £111 13/ being subscribed, and the balance wasi placed to the funds of the club. The general expenditure was nearly £13 below that of last year, while the expenditure for the green was £23 9/6 below that of last year. The reports and balance sheet were adopted, on the motion of the chairman. The chairman presented the prizes to the successful competitors:— Club cup and championship, Mr J .V. Dingle. Subscription pairs, Major Pirl<v first prize, electro plated butter dish; W. Lnmbert (skip), gold brooch; J. McDonald, second prize, silver napkin ring; W. C. Culpan (skip), silver teaspoons. Subscription fours: J. Gilmour, electro plated cream and sugar dish; J. H. Mackle, gold brooch; J. Thornes, gold medal; W. C. Culpan (skip), pair silver mounted bowls. Match for first year's players': Pair of Lrnirle's bowls (presented by Mr F. Prime), Mr J. H. Mackle. The election of officers then took place as follows: President, Mr W. Coleman. The retiring; president pinned the president's gold medal on Mr Coleman's breast, and UK ducted him to the chair. The newly-elect-ed president returned thanks. Vice presidents, Messrs Arthur Myers and James A. Hoslett; secretary, Mr P. Butler (Mr A. Hegman retiring); treasurer, Mr J. Carlaw; auditor, Mr Wm Kayll. All these officers were elected unanimously. Committee, Messrs A. W. Thomson, William Gorrle, W. C. Culpan, W. Lambert, J. Thornes and D. Ross. Trohies or prises were offered for next competition season as follows: Mr Arthur Myers, a trophy, to be left to the committee; £5 prize by Mr J. V. Dingle, to be arranged by committee; Messrs Culpan and Haslett, trophies of two guineas each, to be left to be p.nanged with committee; Mr Hugh Campbell, trophy for runner up in championship; Mr A. Holderi (on behalf 'ct Stfvart Dawson and Co.), two prizes or two guineas each, for a pairs' match; prize of two guineas by Mr A. Hoffman; and trophies by president (Mr W. Cok-man) and D. Ross. Mr A. W. Thomson moved, "That in order to economise time, it be a recommendation to the Match Committee in the annual encounter for the championship of the club to arrange the entrants into sections, according to their merits, to play the match i:i such sections, and that the sections shall play off to a finish." Carried unanimously. Mr Carlaw moved, "That thesecretary be requested to ask the ex-)W Mdents to furnish their portraits to the club, if they can kindly do so." He staled thai through Mr Gorrie they had obtained the portrait of the late Mr Thos. Maciarlane, one of the founders of tl'6 club, and that it was already suspended upon ihe walls of the pavilion. The motion was carried. Mr Lambcmrne announced that the holders of the Challenge Fours gold badges had ahibandea, and returned the badges to the cluu. It was left to the committee to arrange the conditions for fresh contests. It was carried that it be a direction to the delegates to the bowling association to obtain an alteration in the condition of pompetitlon for the pennant, namely, that one rmK represent each club,instead of three rInKS. Votes" of thanks wore accorded to tha outgoing officers, with special votes o* thanks to the secretary, treasurer, green superintendent, and the ladies, who had sittenoed to the refreshment department.
