THE GOLDFIELDS.
MAY QUEEN.
(By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.)
THAMES, this day
In the May Queen section during the past month stoping has proceeded as usual. No. 4 lode is yielding a large tonnage of payable ore. The length of the block operated on is 300 ft, and the width of the lode varies from 12 inches, where the stone is a compact Body, to Bft, where the stone is split up in numerous parallel veins, connected by small interlacing stringers and leaders. It. is characteristic of this lode that where it is split up the best results are obtained. About the same quantity of water was met with in this section, which prevents the. deepening of the shaft, to No. 8 level. Three weeks ago a start was made mlh the drainage of the crosscut between the May Queen and the Queen of Beauty shafts. On Saturday 73ft had been driven, ■ leaving about 150 ft to go. When this is completed, sinking will be resumed. In the Saxon section stoping is still proceeding in the shallow intermediate level' from No. 2 winze, a small quantity of payable ore being obtained here. Cardigan section: In No. 7 level the drive on No. 2 lode has been extended 267 ft west •of crosscut. As the drive proceeds the leading- stope has been broken out with n rock-drill, thus facilitating the work when stoping is commenced. The lode continue.* '
look well; colours of gold are frequently seen when the reef is brolcen down. At No. 6 level two winzes have been sunk, to connect the drive at No. 7 level, thus affording ventilation and enabling prospecting at these points.
