WELLINGTON, this day. The. special commissioner of the Wellington Railway League, who recently toured the King Country, says that sly grog-selling is prevalent from Mangaweka to Te Kuiti, but since a H' " cense was granted at Mangaweka little sly-grog selling exists. He condemns the inadequacy of the accommodation at boarding-houses. He alleges cases of liquor were carted -into . j the townships for wholesale distribu- ( tion, followed by a wild orgie lasting1 for days or weeks. Grog was sold i" nearly every kaianga, being sent direct from merchants, and drunk neat* ;■ burning into the vitals of the nft* 8 tives. He declares giving the Maori! a vote on the licensing question would ; place the whole power under the control of the chiefs, TE AWAMUTU, this day.
