BREACH OF SHIPPING AND SEAMEN'S ACT.
AN IMPORTANT CASE.
At the Police Court to-day, Mr W. D. Reid, Superintendent of Marine at Auckland, brought a. case of importance to. masters and owners of vessels. The Hon. J. A. Tole appeared for the Marine Department. Defendant; Robert Wilson, appeared in person and pleaded, guilty.. Mr Tole said the case was an important one. Masters and1 owners were In the habit of not entering into proper agreements with seamen, and improperly discharging them, ~ Robert Wilson was charged that on 3rd June, on the scow Hauturu, he unlawfully carried Bert Morris, a seaman, without entering into an agreement, as required by "The Shipping and Seamen- s Act, 1877." Defendant was also charged that he failed to sign and give'to William Sowry, on his discharge from the Hauturu, a certificate of discharge, contrary to the form sanctioned by the Minister of Marine. Defendant said he had nothing to aay. His boat was a scow, 27 tons. Mr Tole said that he did not,ask for a heavy penalty. • ; On the first charge His Worship inflicted a fine of 10/ and costs 36/, and on the second charge a fine of 20/ and 36/ costs was imposed.
