Mr W. Cussen (says the Waikato "Times")' has been engaged for some time past in laying off the native lands surrounding Kawhia Harbour, and cutting them up into blocks varying in size from 200 to 1000 acres, according to the quality of the soil, with a view to settlement. The total area is about 30,000 acres, and it embraces the land which the native owners declined to sell to the Government. Provided an alteration is' made in the existing land legislation, the sections would be leased directly to Europeans, though it is possible that the' Government may yet be able to arrange other terms. An enormous traders now done in the export of rabbits from this colony. Some idea of its extent moy be gathered when it is stated that during the month of June 22,693 crates of rabbits, of the value of £17,019, were shipped from Port Chalmers alone.
