HONGKONG, July 29
A Chinese representing a Russian bank in Pekin has arrived here. He confirms the reported massacre of foreigners at Pekin.
He states that when the Foreign Legations were stormed, and there was no hope, the Foreign Ministers killed their families, and Sir Robert Hart, Inspector-General of Customs, killed himself rather than fall into the hands of the Chinese.
LONDON, July 28
The "Times" ridicule? an announcement by Cheng, director of telegraphs, that the. foreign Ministers were safe on Tuesday, and that the Chinese were courteously supplying them with food, fruit, and vegetables, suggesting that it would be better to supply them with telegraph forms.
The British Government, replying to the Emperor of China's request for mediation, stated that they could hold no communication with China until Sir Claude Mac Donald's safety was assured.
Baron Yon Ketteler's groom declares that the Legations were still defended on July 9.
WASHINGTON, July 28
America refuses to fall in with Li Hung Chang's suggestion to stop the Allied expedition to Pekin, conditional upon the Ambassadors being safely brought to Tientsin, Mr Hay, Secretary of State, being concerned about their safety during the transfer from Pekin .to Tientsin.
