In the matter of Mr Shaw's application for the renewal of the license for the Commercial Hotel, Paeroa, as the police report was somewhat unfavourable, Mr Cotter appeared in support and adduced evidence to show that the hotel was in every way well conducted. The renewal was granted. Reports against the licensees'of the Grand Hotel and Kopu Hotel were also ins-estigated, Mr Jackson appearing in the former case, and Mr Miller in the latter, and both were not sustained, a.nd renewals were granted. The various applications for a new license at Waihi wero thrown out as no Order-in-Council had been issued, and the Bench had therefore no jurisdiction; the only application which the Bench considered was that of M. G. Power, who applied for a license at Waihi, and whoso solicitor (Mr Baume) stated that if the Bench authorised the issue of a publican's license to Mr Power v l Waihi the application for renewal of Mr Power's license for his hotel in Paeroa would be withdrawn, and thus no increase would take place in the district. Mr Moss
appeared for certain objectors who had lodged a memorial against the grant of this license, and the Bench were occupied iin ring- the afternoon in hearing legal argument and evidence for and against the application. "Witnesses called by Mr Baume deposed to the necessity for increased hotel accommodation and to the fact of travellers being unable to obtain beds; whilst, on the other hand, Mr G. Alexander and the Rev. J. J. Bates considered there was plenty of hotel accommodation.
After the tea adjournment the Licensing Bench met in committee to consider Power's application, and, on the Court re-opening, the Chairman announced that the Committee had decided to grant the application, on certain conditions as to ihe class of building and speedy erection. The application for a renewal of license to the Ohinemuri Hotel, at Paeroa, was then withdrawn.
At yesterday's meeting Mr Jackson, solicitor, applied for an extension of hours to the Karsingahake hotels to 11 o'clock, but the Bench unanimously decided to refuse this application.
