His Excellency the Governor and Captain Alexander visited tbe Pakuranga School on Monday. Mr Green, the headmaster, had the schoolroom nicely decorated, also an archway at the entrance to the school ground of ferns and nikan. interspersed with flowers and flags. The children were paraded at the entrance, parents and others assembling behind. His Excellency inspected tho children's garden beds, kept by the children in the nnner standards, and which reflect great credit on their teacher, who has done so much to beautify the surroundings of the school and grounds. The children of the upper standards sang "Flag of England Old.", while those In 'the lower standards rendered verr tastefnllv an action song, "The Parmer." The National Anthem was then sung. His Excellency. addressing the children, said: They need not be proud merely on account of hems: New Zealanders, but because they belonged to so great an empire. This year would be a most memorable year on account of the great war in which they were engaged with the Boers In. South Africa. 'He, believed that there was a great future before that country. This year would also be remembered by the school children all over the country, being one in which they had so many holidays. He was addtne one more in honour of his visit, and felt "they would not lose by it. but, on the contrary, would work all the harder. At the coacivsion of
the address the Misses Dorothy Adams and Agnes Bruce, of the infant class respectively, presented buttoniares to His Excellency and Captain Alexander. Mr Green formally welcomed His Excellency to Pakuranga, and mentioned that it was the first time a Governor of New Zealand had visited the district. The visit had given the children and people great pleasure. He asked Lord Ranfurly to kindly commemorate the event iby planting a tree in the school grounds. I The tree (Liveodendron Tulipifera)—tulip i tree —was duly planted. His Excellency re- ! marking that he had a similar one at his j own home iv Ireland, said to be the finest :in Great Britain, being 80ft high. Mr E. ' ! Fitzpatrick called for three cheers for His j Excellency and Lady Ranfurly. The Gorer- [ nor's party then drove to visit the Bowlck ! Town School. Mrs Green kindly handed I round refreshments to the parents and j friends.
