WELLINGTON NOTES.
(By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.)
WELLINGTON, this day. SALARIES AND LARGE RESPONSIBILITY. In the case of H. A. Eversleigh, convicted of stealing Government moneys and fa_sifj-ing books, the Chief Justice in passing sentence remarked that he agreed that over indulgence, on a smalll salary might have something to do with the offence. The man's salary would not stand it, and as he had access to public money he used it. These remarks have formed the subject of strong comment in the city to-day. Eversleigh was in receipt of a salar3' of ten shillings a day, and ranked as an extra clerk. During two years he handled very large sums of money, and no doubt, under the circumstances, the temptation was very strong. INSPECTOR PARDY. Inspector Pardy, who has been in illhealth for some time past, has resumed his duties. DETECTIVE HENDERSON. Detective Henderson has been transferred to Gisborne.
