GUARDING THE EMBASSIES
FOREIGNERS ATTACKED BY
BOXERS,
HONGKONG, June 2.
The Tsung-li-Yamen has reluctantly admitted 100 marines from each Power to guard the Embassies in Pekin. There are 23 warships assembled of? Taku, and 11.000 troops aboard nine Russian warships. Seven hundred "Boxers" on Thursday attacked 30 foreigners, including six ladies, who were escaping in boats from Pootingfu, 80 miles south-west of Pekin. „•
Four foreigners were killed and many wounded. It is believed that Russia hoped to seize a position controlling, the Pei-ho River, on a pretext of crushing the "Boxers."
America and Germany, however, pre« vented her, insisting- on joint international intervention.
