THE GRAND JURY'S PRESENTMENTS.
(To the Editor.)
Sir, —In these days we are told newspapers are great teachers and upholders of morality. We know we all wish them to be so. It is that wish which prompts this petition—that you will do your share in ridding your city of the hideous state of things noW existing—things dealt with in the second of the grand jury's presentments. You can make strong appeals to the Minister for Justice. As you care for your city's welfare, you are begged to do all you can. Doubts as to the accuracy of the statements? No, you cannot have any. Let anyone. who does so doubt go and see for themselves. Any night—any two or three nights—will be sufficient. It gives them a heartsickeniug conviction as to their truth. Or let them ask for facts of those who are trying' to stop this most hideous tide of vice and Avoe. Here in Auckland we learn the plague is in Sydney. Instantly we. are all energy. We work", we cleanse, we spend, our papers e?acourage and ui'ge on. We are told toy those who know that there is worse than any plague among us, that HI is spreading, that it must spread. lAnd yet we are apathetic. We tell ourselves it cannot be; it is too horrible. But it is, and let us beware of spying1, "Peace, peace*' when there is hoiTible guilt which we are doing nothing" to stop and therefore something- to encourage;—l am, etc.,
ONE WHO IS THANKFUX-TO THE GRAND JURY. '
