SATURDAY'S CUP MATCHES.
WINS (FOR NEWTON, GRAFTON,
AND CITY.
Our footballers were again favoured with fine weather on Saturday afternoon, and there was in consequence a large attendance of the public at Potter's Paddock. The match on No. 1 ground, between Newton and Ponsonby, proved very close indeed. Up till the last seven minutes it looked as though neither side would score: then Newton gained a rather lucky try, and following up their advantage scored a second try soon afterwards. Neither try was converted, so that the red and whites won by G points to nil. On No. 2 ground City won their match with Suburbs by default, the blacks failing to put a team in the field. At Devonport Grafton defeated the local team by 4 points to
Newton still lead for the championship, with Grafton and City, second, and Ponsonby and North Shore third. The takings at Potter's Paddock on Saturday were generously donated by the Union to the Auckland Cricket Association.
