The London Missionary Society's yacht John Williams, which put into Auckland on Friday evening last, not having been allowed to communicate with the shore at Rarotonga, has been ordered to remain in quarantine for the present. The vessel has a number of native teachers on board, who have been at mission stations in New Guinea, and were being returned to their homes at Rarotonga. On the voyage from Sydney to Rarotonga three of the Islanders, a woman and two children, died of a bronchial complaint, induced by the cold weather in Sydney, following the heat of New Guinea. At Rarotonga the authorities would not permit any of the passengers to land, and she returned here, being ordered into quarantine by the Health Officer (Dr. E. Sharman). Yesterday afternoon another of the passengers, a male teacher, died. The body was taken over to Motuihi this morning, where it was buried.

A unique application" was made by Mr E. Mahony in Chamber's fit -the Supreme Court this morning. It was an application under the Imperial Statute 3 and 4, William 4th, chapter 01, otherwise known as the Fines and Recoveries Act. The application was made on behalf of Mary Ann Leahy, of Auckland, to dispense with the consent of her husband in respect of a dealing with land left- to the applicant as a reversioner, the will under which the applicant, is entitled having taken effect, and the applicant having married prior to the coming into operation of the Married Woman's Property Act, 1884. His Honor said the procedure was a peculiar one. and was very littfe known, the fact being that Mr Mahony who was moving in the present matter, had adopted a similar course some ten years ago. The order was made by His Honor as prayed, and the concurrence of the husband dispensed with. We believe it is intended to re cord the application in the New Zenland law reports as a matter of practice.
