FIRES IN WELLINGTON.

WELLINGTOX, this day.
During the past year there were 113 calls to fire in the city, but the actual number of fires was 77. of which 13 were serious and 58 slight. The estimated loss on insured property was £8150; on uninsured, £1550.* The total value of property at risk was £129.600. The fire brigade superintendent reports that an alarm installation for 31 points and combined horse escape and water tower has been. ordered. Before the new station is occupied, he urges the brigade should be increased by tour permanent mon and a boy, also that a station be erected at Newtown. He reports that a number of boarding-houses are in a dangerous condition owing- to the design of the buildings, and the absence of fire escapes, that fire in them would probably cause loss of life. standing all that has been done sineQ the Royal Oak hotel fire to insist on hotels being properly equipped with escapes, Mr Hugo says more than one are still dangerous.
