CONDEMNED BUILDINGS.
POLICE COURT PROCEEDINGS. TENEMENTS ORDERED TO BE PULLED DOWN. At (he Magistrate's Court Hi is mornling, before .Mr 11. W. Brabant, S.M., 'and Mr M. IXiecol, J.P., the matter of certain buildings in the city, condemned on the ground of being insanitary, was brought up. Mr Thomas Cotter (City Solicitor) applied to the Court for an order authorising the demolition of four tenements owned by T. T. Maseiield; and situated at the corner of Swnnson j and Albert streets, in accordance with certificate given. Dr. F. \V.' King (City Health Ollicer) deposed that he ami Dr. Mason (one of the Sanitary Commissioners) had | inspected the building's in question (which were a block of tenements under one roof), and that they gave a certificate stating that these buildings were unfit for occupation and injurious to the public health, and stating that in their opinion they should be pulled , down. Xo action had yet been taken. ; James Lovell,-chief messenger at the j City Council Offices, deposed to servingl \ the necessary notices on Mr Masetield ! yesterday. The town clerk (Mr IT. W. Wilson) ! also gave evidence. ; Mr 0. V. .lones, who appeared for Mr MasefieJd, said that the tenements were occupied by old age pensioners, and it I was difficult to get them out. j The Bench made an order, under j section 303 -of the Public Health Act, j directing- that the buildings mentioned j in the Medical Officers' certificate be ! taken down before 10 a.m. of Monday • next. ! Proceedings in connection with I Robert Sadgrove's house were adjourn- j I'd till Monday morning next. ! Mr Cotter mentioned the fact that a ; notice had been given to Mr E. M. : Col em an regarding a place in Swanson- i .street. As a matter of fact, it had : been discovered that the shed con- j demncd was not on Mr Coleman's pro- j perty, and he therefore was not respon- | sibl'e. Mr Cotter also said that there j was a certain building on some pro- ! perty purchased by Mr Colcman, and ! that, as soon as the latter found it ■ was in an unsatisfactory state he had J it pulled down, without being requested to take any action.
